Before and After Teeth Whitening Procedures
A bright, white smile can build confidence in both personal and professional settings, which is why people seek out teeth whitening solutions more than any other cosmetic dental treatment. The good news is that having a beautiful white smile may be easier than you think. Many people achieve the look they’ve been dreaming of with Downtown Family Dental of Baraboo’s Before and After Teeth Whitening procedures.
How does teeth whitening (bleaching) work?
Understanding how teeth whitening works, requires some understanding of how teeth become discolored. There are two types of discoloration: extrinsic and intrinsic. Your normal daily brushing with over-the-counter whitening toothpastes will help remove the normal extrinsic stains (i.e. surface stains) left from coffee, tea and red wine, etc. Intrinsic stains (stains below the tooth enamel) are caused by internal factors like loss of the nerve or trauma and they are harder to change.
Initially, Dr. Amanda Ganshert and Dr. Robert Konen will evaluate your specific stain concerns and speak with you about your goals related to whitening. From there, the process will start by taking impressions of your teeth. Then, in only a day or two, your custom bleach trays will be ready for you to pick up and start using. At the time you pick up your whitening trays, we provide you with a professional kit including bleaching agents that you put into the clear trays.
With only a few hours of wear per day, the special bleaching agent removes extrinsic without altering tooth structure or existing dental work in any way. Within a short time period (and a few ‘whitening check’ appointments with the doctor) your teeth can reach the desired brightness and only need occasional re-treatments to maintain your new whiter smile.
Intrinsic stains may or may not be lightened by bleaching trays alone. Depending on the efficacy of the bleaching trays, the doctors will discuss additional bleaching options that can further address these tougher stains.
What are my teeth whitening options?
Downtown family Dental of Baraboo uses a brand of whitening products called Opalescence. More information can be found on their website here. Make sure you talk with Dr. Amanda Ganshert and Dr. Robert Konen to see what’s best for you, but here are our office’s recommended teeth whitening options:
Professional Whitening with Custom Take Home Trays
Pros: Best for long term results, customized to your teeth, decreased sensitivity, convenient.
Cons: Slightly more expensive than over the counter
Quick Pro Zoom Whitening (In-office bleaching)
Pros: Quick results
Cons: Not as effective long term, increased sensitivity issues, slightly more expensive
Over-the Counter Whitening Strips
Pros: Cheap, accessible, can whiten a few shades
Cons: Inconsistent results as areas are missed between and around teeth, increased sensitivity, not as effective long term as professional take home trays.
When to whiten?
If you are having dental work done to your front teeth, you would usually bleach first. Once you reach your desired shade, you should wait one week to allow your teeth to stabilize before having dental work done. Have a big social event coming up? Whiten at least one month before the big day!
Bleaching is not recommended for children under the age of 16, or for pregnant women. It is also not advised to bleach sensitive teeth, or for patients with receding gums, exposed roots, worn enamel, damaged restorations or peroxide allergies.
